1) Your egg had been in a locked oak trunk under your bed since you were old enough to walk. The trunk has been a constant presence in your life, like the trunk of your sister has been in hers. A silent companion and a mystery. Pap opens it for you once in a while, on your 9th birthday and one New Year’s before granny passed away. That time, granny held you egg in her lap, its wide flat weight so smooth in her wrinkled hands. She smiled at you and told you that she was so proud of you and how lucky you were. Sister took her trunk to Academy when she was sixteen but it has yet to hatch. Pap says it takes time and to be patient.
